Google reported a nice third quarter earnings with $9.72 billion in revenue and $2.72 billion in profit and it also laid out some interesting information on the Android front. The company said that there are now more than 190 million Android devices out there and tried to downplay the patent attack on its platform.

CEO Larry Page said there are 190 million Android devices activated and the company previously said that it was activating 500,000 Android devices a day. To put that number into context, Apple just announced that there have been over 250 million iOS devices sold. Page also said that the mobile business is on track for $2.5 billion in revenue this year and this includes all platforms because it monetizes through search.

As for the patent attack on Android, Page said it probably won’t work and the Motorola deal gives it enough defensive tools to remove some of the uncertainty. The full quote goes like this:

We see no signs the patent attacks are effective. We think other companies’ actions there will alienate customers … We announced our intention about Motorola, we’re serious about protecting the Android ecosystem.

Is that activated as a whole? And how can the numbers be compared with ios?

  • Jon Garrett

you cant be serious with a question like that?  Android activations is near 1 million per day. Android OS is the most popular mobile OS both here in the United States and around the world. Android’s smartphone market share worldwide is near 50% while iOS has remained stagnant at around 28%

What I mean is apple claimed to have sold 250millions and android has190 activated devices, now how many idevices sold out of those are active the 250? Now how it can be compared on both

  • Jon Garrett

Oh, I see what you mean. If apple has sold 250 million devices, off the top of my head making my best guess Id say…..

    - they are talking about sold devices, not activated

    - many of those sold devices are wifi only iPod and iPad which cannot be activated

    - half their devices are upgrades and not new devices. for example, I had a 3G, my wife the 3GS. on launch day we both got the i4. so for apple they counted 4 activations instead of 2. 2 being the correct number of activations because we did NOT activate new devices.

again, this is just my best guess. I could be wrong, I could be spot on.

Yes ,its what I wish we knew, if those are devices that are still operating or just sales in general. It makes easy to compare things like that

Hey, what’s this I here about the IRS is investigating Google for supposedly having a 15% tax rate. When the corporate tax rate is 35%? I smell something fishy.
