Micromax is a company that many of you haven’t heard of, which is a shame. They’re one of the leading suppliers of mobile phones in India. They’re Indian designed, Indian made, and they give people what bigger manufacturers have traditionally been sheepish to deliver because of fears that they’ll piss off the operators. Take dual SIM for example. Nokia is only now shipping dual SIM products, but they’ve been available for years thanks to companies like Micromax. Why is dual SIM important? For some people, they need to count their pennies in order to get by, and if they can save $0.05 on a phone call by using one SIM versus another, despite it being inconvenient to turn off their phone and swap SIM cards, they’ll do it. Operators obviously don’t want people owning devices to make it easier for them to save money, so the threat that they’ll stop doing business with a company like Nokia is why the Finnish handset maker is so incredibly late to the game. But anyway, back to Micromax, their new dual SIM product, the X395 Convertible, does something incredibly unique thanks to the use of a three-way axis motion sensor.
Simply shake the phone, and you’ve swapped SIM. Easy as that. No need to teach an illiterate family member how to go through menues. No need to reboot a phone. Just give you phone a shake, and boom, your second SIM is active. Shake it again and you switch back to the first SIM. The shaking gesture also skips to the next song should you be using the music player, and if you get a phone call you can just turn over the device and it’ll silence your ringtone.
How brilliant is that? Best thing is that this device is just a little more than $40.
