Everyone knows Apple’s App Store is still ahead when it comes to mobile applications, but the Android Market has made tremendous progress when it comes to gaining ground. The one advantage Android has is its open-source nature along with its many phone choices, which attract both developers and consumers.

Google’s mobile operating system has garnered monstrous numbers, which include 150 million Android devices activated worldwide and over 295,000 apps available in the Android Market as of September 2011. With this ridiculous growth experts predict that the Android Market will overtake the App Store in both app growth and downloads per year, with an estimated 8.1 billion downloads from the Android Market in 2011. Wow.

That said, Cricket has posted an incredible infographic detailing the evolution of the Android Market. In the graphic you’ll notice some pretty impressive numbers like 25 percent of apps are games and 60 percent of apps are free, compared to Apple’s dreadful 37 percent. Check out the growth of the Android Market and how it’s positioned to become the industry leader in the infographic below. Tell us if you see any stats that grabbed your attention the most.
