Motorola teases a new compact Razr foldable, and the timing is no accident

Apple announces a foldable iPhone and, within hours, Motorola is already posting teasers on Instagram. Coincidence? Not a chance. Motorola teased a brand new Razr model on September 9th, and this one is a significant departure from the flip phone design the brand is known for.

The teaser is an Instagram Reel that runs through 22 years of Razr history, phone by phone, before landing on a silhouette of something new. And it’s chunky. The next Razr looks notably thicker and stockier than its predecessor, with a book-style, compact fold structure rather than the vertical clamshell flip that made the original Razr iconic. Think Samsung Galaxy Z Fold territory, but smaller and more pocketable.

What’s interesting here is the direction the whole industry is moving. Wide-screen foldables are having a moment right now. The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8 went broader with its screen ratio, and Apple’s just-announced iPhone Duo follows that same logic. So Motorola isn’t just chasing a trend, it’s trying to stay relevant in a category that’s suddenly getting very competitive very fast.

The teaser doesn’t give us a name, a release date, or any real specs. So we’re working with shadows and silhouettes for now. But that silhouette alone tells us a few things worth paying attention to:

  • The fold is horizontal, not vertical, meaning this is a full book-style foldable
  • The body looks wider and thicker than current Razr models
  • A larger inner display seems likely, given the overall proportions
  • The design keeps the compact form factor rather than going full Galaxy Z Fold 8 size

This isn’t Motorola’s first step into non-clamshell foldable territory either. Earlier this year, the company dropped three new clamshell Razr models and also announced its first full-sized foldable, the Motorola Razr Fold. We reviewed it in May and came away genuinely impressed. It held its own against Samsung and Google, which is not easy to say about a first-generation device in a mature product category.

So Motorola is building something. It’s not just dipping its toes in, it’s committing to foldables across multiple form factors and price points. A compact book-style Razr would fill a gap in its lineup and give buyers who want something smaller than the Razr Fold but more capable than a flip phone an actual option.

Still, we should pump the brakes a little. A social media teaser with no specs and no release window is exactly that: a teaser. Companies do this to generate buzz, and it works. But until Motorola shows us the real thing, we’re just looking at a silhouette and reading into proportions. More details are coming. The question is when, and whether the final product can back up the hype that’s already building around it.
