Google is well-known for the code names it chooses for Android. Each major revision gets a new letter in the alphabet and a sweet-themed codename. While Google has celebrated each Android codename, Apple has been silent on the names it uses for iOS. Developer Steve Troughton-Smith spilled the beans and tweeted what he claims are the internal project names for each version of iOS.
Starting with iOS 1.0 and continuing up to iOS 5, Apple has used ski areas as the code name. The list is as follows:
- 1.0: Alpine: likely a reference to Alpine Meadows in Lake Tahoe
- 1.1: Little Bear: likely a reference to Bear Mountain in California
- 2.0: Big Bear: likely a reference to Bear Mountain in California
- 2.1: Sugarbowl: another Lake Tahoe Ski Area
- 2.2: Timberline: an Oregon ski resort located on Mount Hood
- 3.0: Kirkwood: another Lake Tahoe Ski Area
- 3.1: Northstar: another Lake Tahoe Ski Area
- 3.2: Wildcat: ski area in White Mountains of NH
- 4.0: Apex: Canadian ski area in British Columbia
- 4.1: Baker: ski area in Glacier, Washington
- 4.2: Jasper: Marmot Basin ski area near Jasper, Alberta Canada
- 4.3: Durango: Colorado Ski area
- 5.0: Telluride: Colorado Ski area
- 5.1: Hoodoo: ski area in Santiam Pass, Oregon
Hopefully, Apple (or developers like Troughton-Smith) will continue to provide these codenames. It’s a fun and refreshing change to discuss whimsical codenames instead of lawsuits and earnings statements.
