The Financial Times is saying that Nokia is looking to sell its luxury phone unit – Vertu. The report author cites an unnamed source, adding that the Finns have retained Goldman Sachs as an advisor to sell the UK-based company. Apparently, private equity firms are identified as potential buyers, though some other luxury brands could also bid for Vertu, which BTW is said to be highly profitable.
Of course, this is still a rumor and honestly I’m not sure Nokia should take that route. Sure, you could argue now that they’ve adopted Windows Phone, they should focus all their efforts in making money from smartphones running Microsoft’s OS. However, I’m not for killing the cash cow, presuming Vertu does make money — and we’re not sure about that since they don’t report their figures. Simply put, Vertu is well positioned in the market that can’t be that easily “breached” by other companies…
In any case, we’ll keep our eyes on this story and let you know as soon as we hear something new. Stay tuned in the meantime, k?
