Sony announced that its Music Unlimited streaming music service will finally make its way to iOS at some point this quarter. This streaming music app has been available for Android and PCs for a while now. The iOS version of the app will bring offline caching for subscribers to Sony’s service, allowing them to save playlists for listening when away from a network connection.
Tim Schaaff, head of Sony Entertainment Network and Sony’s Michael Aragon assured folks over at CES its Music Unlimited app would differ from its competitors. Their plan is to take advantage of its major retail and international presence, while targeting users who have yet to adopt a cloud music service, instead of directly targeting those using competitors.
I don’t see how Sony can compete against Spotify and Rdio, as these streaming services are far ahead of the pack. It’s hard to transition people to a cloud music service, especially if they haven’t done so with the competition already. Sony has to do better at differentiating themselves from the others. I don’t use any cloud music services, but if were to, why would I choose Sony over services which already have millions of customers like Spotify and Rdio?
