Remember the LG Optimus 3D? It was announced at Mobile World Congress 2011, then hit store shelves five months later in July. No matter how hard you tried, you couldn’t avoid the amount of hype that thing got from the press. Wow, dual core processor, and oh my god, two cameras on the back, and whoa, no freaking way, 3D! The Optimus 3D represented the pinnacle of checking off every box on a spec sheet in an attempt to create the perfect product, yet in the end it ended up being worth a fraction of the sum of all its parts. Seeing as how the phone industry loves sequels as much as the movie industry, we’re not exactly shocked to discover that there’s going to be an LG Optimus 3D 2 being announced later this month at Mobile World Congress 2012. Specs wise you’re looking at 1.2 GHz dual core processor, 4.3 inch screen that pushes 800 x 480 pixels, and dual 5 megapixel cameras. In other words, it’s the exact same thing as the first generation Optimus 3D, except that the processor is 200 MHz faster and it’s about 2 mm thinner. The bad news doesn’t stop there though. Ready for the ultimate facepalm? This thing will run Gingerbread.
Now before you stand up and find the nearest wall to start headbutting, note that LG does have some other devices planned for MWC, namely a quad core Ice Cream Sandwich smartphone that’s supposedly called the CX 3. We know it’s going to have an HD resolution screen and that it’ll use an NVIDIA Tegra 3 chip, so it can’t be that bad, right?
Oh wait, we forgot to mention that LG’s Android skins typically look like a horrible knock off of Samsung’s Android skin, which itself looks like a knock off of Apple’s iOS. Sigh, OK, so maybe LG isn’t the company to watch this year.
