Samsung and AT&T announce the Rugby Smart, available March 4 for $99

Samsung and AT&T today announced its latest Android handset offering called the Rugby Smart, which is slated to launch on March 4th. This new mid-level device is powered by Android 2.3 Gingerbread, but its most impressive feature is its ruggedized shell, which protects it from extreme nature elements like water and dust. The Samsung handset is priced at the affordable cost of $99.99 with a two-year service commitment.

Both Sammy and the Death star (AT&T) claims the Rugby Smart is not only dustproof, but can be submerged in up to 1m of water for 30 minutes, and can withstand “extreme temperatures.” Other than that, customers can expect the usual features you’d find in most mid-range handsets, like a 3.7-inch WVGA Super AMOLED display, expandable memory that supports up to 32GB via microSD, 4GB of internal memory, a 5MP rear facing camera with flash and auto focus; 720p HD video capture; 1.3 MP front facing camera, and lastly, a 1650 mAh LiIon Poly battery.

There’s some excitement between the two when talking about the Rugby Smart, as executives from both companies spoke about the rugged device, saying:

“The Samsung Rugby Smart is perfect for active customers who need another level of durability with their smartphone,” said Jeff Bradley, senior vice president, Devices, AT&T Mobility and Consumer Markets.

“AT&T customers are now able to stay connected with a durable smartphone while experiencing even the roughest environment,” said Dale Sohn, president of Samsung Mobile.

This phone may actually move off shelves for not only its cheap price tag, but the need for a ruggedized smartphone on the market. Truth is, people really dig these kind of phones because they are sturdy and can take more abuse then a lot of the fragile smartphones out today.
