As we sit here eagerly awaiting the March 7th launch of the iPad 3 (or iPad HD), Ars Technica has some interesting bits of information about Apple’s next iPad device and a new version of iOS for later this year.
According to Ars Technica’s server logs, some folks in Cupertino are accessing Ars Technica’s site with iPads running iOS 6 and having the rumored display resolution of 2,048 x 1,536. The data strongly suggests that the next iPad will have the retina display we love with the iPhone 4S.
The current consumer version of iOS is 5.0.1, with a 5.1 update currently in the hands of developers for testing. While we don’t expect the iPad 3 to launch with iOS 6 in tow, the fact that its showing up in Ars’ system reports indicates that Apple is hard at work on the next generation of iOS, though rumors are scarce as to what such an update would entail. Instead, the iPad 3 launch next week may be the first time iOS 5.1 is openly available to consumers, hitting existing iPad and iPhone devices.
Everything seems to be coming together for Apple’s iPad 3 launch, which will occur in five short days. What do you think Apple will work into iOS 6?
