Richard Lai of Engadget got some hands-on time with prototype parts that supposedly came from a iPad 3. The parts were originally acquired by Chinese blog MIC Gadget. According to Lai, the parts suggest the iPad 3 will be about the same size and shape as the iPad 2; even the smart covers for the iPad 2 are compatible with these parts.
The leaked components have the same aluminum body with support for 3G connectivity, a volume rocker and a spot for a slightly larger camera module. It also has slightly thicker profile and a more tapered curve that could house additional internal hardware, like a bigger battery for an LTE radio, postulates Lai. There’s also a 9.7-inch glass cover with a home button.
Of course, these are prototype parts and we have no idea when they were made. We will have to wait a few more days to get the real information from Tim Cook et al. this Wednesday. While you wait, click through to Engadget to get a closer look at the leaked tablet components.
