Google surprised us all yesterday when out the blue it decided to dump the name Android Market for Google Play. Now the search giant plans to make available audiobooks and magazines to it’s already impressive lineup of media related offerings, including apps, music, movies and e-books. Google is trying to make its store a more intuitive experience for all Android users, almost in an Apple iTunes-esque way.
This new development broke thanks to an unofficial Google news site called Google Operating System. The site discovered not only a Audio Books page, but two genres for audiobooks listed on the site: audio books and audiobooks. The unofficial Google site believes the duplicated spellings is due to the genres being automatically generated.
Making the jump to audiobooks and magazines wouldn’t at all be surprising, as it puts the search giant on par with companies like Apple and Amazon, who both offer the same kinds of media related content. Dropping the name Android Market shows that Google is attempting to rebrand or revamp itself, doing away the perception of it being just an app store.
That said, Google is making this drastic change shows the company is trying to keep itself fresh and creative. Google before the change, didn’t really have an ecosystem to boast about, while companies like Amazon who uses the search giants mobile operating system carried its own. This isn’t a bad idea, as it can only make Google products more appealing. Now the question is, will Google show off its new store with the release of its own tablet? Cough — Nexus tab.
