Google confirms Pixel 11 won’t get silicon-carbon batteries, and the excuse is getting old

Samsung just put silicon-carbon batteries in its flagship foldables. Xiaomi has been shipping them for a while. And Google? Google just launched the Pixel 11 series and quietly confirmed it’s sitting this one out. Again.

According to Android Authority, Google confirmed that the Pixel 11 lineup sticks with conventional lithium-ion batteries. The company’s full statement: “Pixel 11 series phones contain 100% recycled lithium in the battery cell. They do not use silicon-carbon batteries. They are built to deliver exceptional reliability, offering 30+ hours of battery life. Our focus is always on the overall user experience, and we continuously explore and qualify emerging technologies to build the best possible experience for our users.”

That word “emerging” is doing a lot of heavy lifting here. Silicon-carbon batteries have been in consumer phones since 2024. Calling them emerging in 2026 is like calling wireless charging a new concept. For comparison, Samsung used almost identical language when it explained why the Galaxy S25 Edge skipped the tech. So either both companies are reading from the same PR script, or they genuinely believe this, and neither option is particularly inspiring.

So why does this actually matter? Silicon-carbon batteries offer higher energy density than standard lithium-ion. That means more battery capacity in the same physical space, or the same capacity in a slimmer body. The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra is a perfect example: it’s marginally thinner than the Fold 7, but packs a 5,000mAh silicon-carbon battery compared to the older model’s 4,400mAh lithium-ion cell. That’s a meaningful real-world difference.

But here’s the thing: Google isn’t completely wrong to be cautious. Silicon-carbon batteries do come with trade-offs worth knowing about:

  • They’re more prone to battery expansion over time
  • Historically, they’ve had weaker long-term health than quality lithium-ion cells
  • Manufacturers have been managing expansion with internal structural changes, not eliminating the risk entirely
  • Google promises 1,000 charge cycles before hitting 80% capacity, while Samsung’s new foldables promise 1,200 and Xiaomi’s 17 pushes that to 1,600

And there’s a messy piece of context here. Some older Pixel A-series phones had serious battery defects with standard lithium-ion. If Google is still working through quality control issues with conventional battery tech, rushing to adopt a newer and more temperamental chemistry might not be the smartest call. Still, that’s a very generous read of the situation.

The bigger picture is that silicon-carbon is clearly where the industry is heading. Battery health is improving with each generation, and the energy density advantages are real. Google can’t call it “emerging” forever. At some point, sticking with lithium-ion starts to look less like careful engineering and more like falling behind.

The Pixel 11 is still a compelling phone in plenty of other ways. But battery technology is one area where Google is now trailing its main competitors, and “30+ hours of battery life” on a conventional cell, while solid, isn’t the same as leading the pack. Hopefully the Pixel 12 is the year Google stops exploring silicon-carbon and actually ships it.
