Microelectronics Technology Inc. (MTI), which is a global leader in the supply of UHF RFID readers, unveiled the MINI ME RFID reader for Android Ice Cream Sandwich devices, allowing users to read and write all EPC Class 1 Gen2 compliant tags at close range.
Alongside the device itself, the company will also provide a “low level command set API” that can be used with Android 4.0 SDK to create custom UHF RFID software apps. The MTI RFID ME GUI app can be downloaded for free from Android Market and can perform basic features of the MTI RFID ME product family, including control output power level in 1 dB step; access to the hardware and firmware revisions; set the EPC Gen2 settings (Q value, Session, Coding – Miller Code); and perform the UHF RFID functions on EPC Gen2 tags. Yeah it sounds like mambo-jumbo, but I guess RFID developers will know what to do with it.
The device itself is kinda pricey, costing $199 plus S&H, with deliveries scheduled for April 2012. You can get a glimpse of it form a demo video below.
