Apple dominates the Japanese smartphone market

Samsung may be dominant in its home country of Korea but its influence doesn’t extend to all Asian countries. According to a recent report from MM Research Institute, one in every three smartphones sold in Japan between March 2011 and March 2012 was an Apple iPhone. While Apple grabbed 30 percent of the Japanese smartphone market, Samsung trailed far behind the market-leading iPhone with a relatively small 8.3 percent share.

Apple was able to grab such a large percentage of Japan’s smartphone sales because of the popularity of the iPhone 4S, claims analysis from MM Research Institute. The expansion of the iPhone to two Japanese wireless carriers, Au and Softbank, also helped to drive iPhone sales up. Overall,  Japanese consumers bought 24.2 million smartphones in the year ending March 2012.
