The iPhone Air was Apple’s big bet on thin phones, but one common complaint was its battery life. Now, ahead of a 2027 launch, early leaks suggest Apple is working to fix that with the iPhone Air 2.
According to NotebookCheck, Weibo tipster Digital Chat Station claims the iPhone Air 2 will ship with a battery above 3,500 mAh. That’s a meaningful step up from the 3,149 mAh cell in the current iPhone Air, which has drawn criticism from users who rely on their phone heavily throughout the day.
The same tipster also points to a 6.55-inch LTPO OLED display with ProMotion support, a dual 48MP rear camera setup, and Apple’s upcoming A20 Pro chip built on a 2nm process. That last detail is significant because earlier speculation suggested Apple might use a lower-end chip to keep costs down. These leaks suggest the company is going the other direction.
A bigger battery is only part of the story. The A20 Pro chip is expected to be more power efficient than the current A19 Pro, and iOS 27 is said to include a revised CPU scheduler that puts less strain on the system overall. Apple also reportedly plans to use its in-house C2 5G modem, the follow-up to the C1X found in the current iPhone Air. That modem is expected to deliver stronger signal performance while drawing less power, which matters a lot in areas with weak coverage where phones tend to burn through battery faster.
Separately, YouTuber John Prosser published render images and specifications based on his own sources. His video describes a phone that keeps its 5.6mm profile despite fitting a larger battery, a second rear camera, and a new chip. That’s an impressive engineering claim if it holds up. Prosser also said the phone will keep its titanium alloy body, setting it apart from the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max, which are rumored to move to a different material.
On design, Prosser pointed to a few notable changes:
- A smaller Face ID camera module that shrinks the Dynamic Island
- A new Lavender color replacing the current Sky Blue
- The existing Space Black, Cloud White, and Light Gold options staying on
Prosser also floated a longer-term idea: that Apple could eventually replace its standard iPhone lineup entirely with a thinner Air-style design, leaving only the Pro models and a foldable iPhone Ultra. He was clear that this wouldn’t happen before 2028 at the earliest and stressed the idea is still speculative.
The broader context here is that Apple is clearly doubling down on the Air as a serious product rather than a niche experiment. The original iPhone Air was notable for its thinness, but it launched with tradeoffs that made some buyers hesitant. If these leaks are accurate, the Air 2 addresses the two biggest ones: battery size and camera versatility. That positions it as a genuine alternative to the Pro line for users who want a capable phone without the weight and bulk.
The iPhone Air 2 is expected to launch in early 2027 alongside the iPhone 18 and iPhone 18e. Apple has not confirmed any of the specifications mentioned in these reports.
