In an uncharacteristic move, Apple has given in to both consumer and regulatory pressure and renamed the 4G version of the iPad. On Apple’s website and in stores, the iPad with a cellular radio is now called the iPad WiFi + Cellular. Apple’s original name for the tablet device, WiFi + 4G, was allegedly confusing to some customers who lived in areas that did not have 4G connectivity.
Customers and consumer advocacy groups in Australia, the UK and other regions complained that Apple’s 4G branding was misleading to customers who thought they were buying a device with fast internet connectivity. Many were upset when they realized they could only get 3G speeds. Apple tried to ease these complaints by putting up disclaimers explaining that 4G speeds were only available in the US and Canada. The company also argued its 4G branding met the standards set by the ITU. Apparently, these measure were not effective and Apple decided its best course of action was to change the iPad name.
