Facebook buys photo-app maker Lightbox

If you thought Facebook was good on mobile photo sharing after it bought Instagram for $1 billion, you’re wrong. Facebook has just acquired Lightbox and it’s another company which specializes in making mobile photo-sharing apps.

Back in the dark old days, there was no Instagram for Android but we were very intrigued by Lightbox because not only did it have photo filters, it provided a visually-pleasing way to store all of your photos for Android devices. It also intelligently tied into your social streams to share and view other people’s photos and the team was also pretty good with HTML5.

On its blog, Lightbox confirmed the deal and gave us an idea of what it will be working on.

Today, we’re happy to announce that the Lightbox team is joining Facebook, where we’ll have the opportunity to build amazing products for Facebook’s 500+ million mobile users.

With this deal, the Instagram buy and the recent News Feed redesign, it’s clear that Facebook is itching to build better mobile products built around photos. Lightbox will be shutting down one June 15 but you’ll be able to download all of your photos from the site.

Any Lightbox fans out there? What do you think of the deal?
