Someone needs to invent an equivalent to Moore’s law for the rise of mobile technology connections. So far I haven’t noticed a pattern, but I’m sure these things don’t grow just like that… or they do?
Anyhow, it took 12 years for GSM wireless technology to reach one billion connections, and WCDMA took 11 years. LTE, on the other hand, will cross the same road in just 7 years, according to the latest report from Strategy Analytics.
The report also notes that this year will end with more than 90 million LTE connections, with the figure further rising to reach the 1 billion mark by 2017, making for the fastest implementation of new wireless technology to date.
The research company’s Sue Ruddsaid said that mobile operators are now trying to reduce cost per GB to match the rate at which revenue per GB is falling. “LTE is one of the key tools to deliver this improvement, with the early volume in LTE devices an encouraging sign for operators looking to maximize return on their LTE investments.”
