Verizon owners of the iPhone 5 may be in for a bit of a surprise when they look at their data usage statistics. A bug in the software on the Verizon iPhone 5 caused cellular data to be used in some instances when a user was also connected to WiFi. Fortunately, Verizon caught the bug early on, and has issued a fix that should set things right going forward. Since the update cannot retrospectively change your data usage, be sure to check your data usage to ensure you stay under your data allotment.
Update: Verizon announced they won’t charge users for “unwarranted” data usage related to this problem.
To update your iPhone 5 to the latest software, head to Settings, then General, and finally Software Update, where you should be greeted with an OTA update. Once the update has completed, restart your iPhone, head back into Settings, then General, then About section in Settings and make sure your carrier reads “Verizon 13.1.”
