Starz Entertainment launched its own video streaming service called Starz Play. The new service will be available for Cox subscribers on a web browser and by way of a dedicated iOS app. Customers get access to movies as well as original content through its Starz, Encore, and MoviePlex channels. Strangely, all the company’s original content offerings will be standalone apps, instead of being rolled into one application.

Starz is excited to make the leap to online and mobile. The company’s CEO Chris Albrecht in a statement said the following:

“We are very pleased to partner with Cox in launching the STARZ PLAY and ENCORE PLAY suite of authenticated online products that we believe will bring tremendous value to our premium subscribers.” He continued saying, “STARZ and ENCORE have long been pioneers in the deployment of advanced services, being the first premium networks to offer authenticated access to our programing through distributors’ online platforms. Now, from big screens to mobile devices, a deep collection of movies and original programming from STARZ and ENCORE provides a winning combination for both our distributors and customers.”

Starz claims its Starz Play, Encore Play, and MoviePlex play services encompass some 1,500 selections. Starz Play and Encore Play apps are available in the App Store, but MoviePlex Play is not yet available. Sorry Android users, Starz said your apps will be coming sometime in the future. It seems Starz thought it could go into the streaming biz alone without the help of Netflix, lets see how the company fares.
