You’ve probably heard that modern tablets are great learning devices, but can they really replace teachers? I would say no, but in some places which lack educated people to teach the young ones, tablets provide great way to learn new stuff. In fact, with more than 100 million first-grade-aged children not having access to schooling, tablets can help a lot, bringing meaningful material to those in need of knowledge.
The OLPC (One Laptop Per Child) program delivered fully loaded Motorola Xoom tablets to two villages in Ethiopia to see what would happen. And surprise, surprise – after just 5 months, the kids have hacked Android.
The program is made to embody four key ideas: narrative interface, personalization capabilities (for the child), software that grows with the child, and support for direct interaction. Thus far, the results are promising though officials think they need more time to find out if kids can learn to read this way…
