Google Maps for iPhone gets updated, adds contacts integration and improved local search

Google Maps for iPhone just got updated with some new features today. Version 1.1 adds some polish to an already impressive application, including integration with Google Contacts so you can quickly search for friends’ addresses by name. Users also get better local places search for finding businesses around you with keywords like “restaurants” and “bars.”

Peep the full change log below:

  • Search your Google Contacts; sign in to have your saved addresses show up when you search for friends and family by name.
  • Quickly search for local places by selecting popular categories such as restaurants, bars, cafe’s, gas stations, etc.
  • Choose between Kilometers or Miles for your preferred distance units.
  • Note that some features may not be available in all countries.

The Maps app can only access contacts if users are signed into their Google account. Looking at the updated version of the application, we were impressed with the improvements made with Nearby Places. It’s deeper integration now.

Users can select one of 13 different categories (bars, grocery stores, movie theaters, coffee shops, and so forth) and the map will show you all locations nearby that meet those criteria. Of course, Zagat reviews are included with the search as well.
