3M is in the final stages of commercializing a new film for LCD screens that can allow up to 50% more color to be displayed.

The problem with existing LCDs is that they are typically limited to displaying 35% or less of the visible color spectrum. 3M’s new QDEF solution can make for a better experience, delivering richly-saturated colors, while minimizing power consumption.

3M’s light management technologies have already contributed in making LCDs thinner, lighter and more energy efficient, though color performance of LCDs has gone largely unchanged until now.

QDEF utilizes the light emitting properties of quantum dots to create an ideal backlight for LCDs, which is one of the most critical factors in the color and efficiency performance of LCDs. A tiny quantum dot can be tuned to emit light at very precise wavelengths, allowing display makers to create a highly-optimized backlight that only produces the exact wavelengths of red, green and blue light for optimal color and energy performance.

The best part is that the new film replaces one already found inside LCD backlights, making sure the manufacturing process requires no new equipment or process changes for the LCD manufacturer.

No word when we’ll actually see this technology in our gadgets…
