Global smartphone display shipments have increased 120% over the past two years, with growing sales of larger, higher resolution displays contributing the most.

According to DisplaySearch, this is a two-fold growth: on one hand we have the iPhone 4/4S and iPhone 5, and on the other makers of the high-end Android smartphones with 720p HD and full HD screens.

Just a few years ago the 3.5-inch iPhone 4 was the leading display size, and today screens larger than 4.1 inches account for nearly half of all smartphone displays shipped. Moreover, this trend will continue with DisplaySearch’s Hiroshi Hayase predicting further expansion of displays over 5 inches in the coming quarters, due to the increasing global penetration of the Galaxy S4.

Of course, panel makers are reacting promptly and many of them are already offering 5-inch full HD products whereas others are planning to join this trend at some point in the second half of the year…
