We reported recently that Ryo Hazuki, the protagonist of Dreamcast cult classic Shenmue, was back in the news. Sega had been teasing images of Ryo driving all sorts of vehicles on its Facebook page. All signs were pointing to Ryo coming to Sega’s kart racer, Sonic & Sega All Stars Racing Transformed. Today Sega confirmed the speculation, Ryo will be playable in the iOS and upcoming Android versions of the game!
Sega confirmed today that the rumors were true, and Ryo Hazuki would be coming to its racer. Ryo will be playable in the iOS and Android ports of the game. Unfortunately there’s no plans to bring him to any other versions of the game at this point. Sega’s kart racer came out last year and is available for just about every platform imaginable, all consoles and PC.
Shenmue fans might have mixed feeling about this move. Bringing back Ryo is great, but hardly the closure many of us have been asking for. The Shenmue saga was a victim of Sega’s turn-of-the century re-shuffling after the retail failure of its Dreamcast. The story was left at a cliffhanger that’s been unresolved for 12 years.
Shenmue’s sales under performed for its humongous budget. But the game has taken on a cult status and there are legions of Sega fans hungry for more. As huge as the game was, it was only the first of a trilogy. The second never made it to North American Dreamcasts, as the system had already been discontinued. Shenmue II was eventually released for the Xbox and the third installment was never made. It’s a cliffhanger that’s been left unfinished for 12 years.
Hopefully Ryo Hazuki’s increased visibility will lead to greater things. Shenmue HD Trilogy? Someday Sega, please?
