Spice Retail has launched a $38 (Rs. 2299) Firefox OS phone in India, the first of its kind for the company. As you would expect, the Spice Fire One Mi – FX 1 is an entry-level device that delivers Mozilla’s platform to first-time smartphone buyers.
Specs include a 3.5-inch HVGA (320 x 480 pixels) screen, 1GHz processor, 2-megapixel rear and 1.3-megapixel front cameras, EDGE data + Wi-Fi connectivity, and dual SIM capability to allow users to rely on two different networks at once. No word on how much RAM the Mi – FX 1 packs, but chances are it tops at 512MB.
“Just one year after the first Firefox OS device launched, Firefox OS smartphone is now available in 17 countries across Europe, Asia and Latin America,” said Dr. Li Gong, President of Mozilla Corporation. “Our partnership with SPICE will be an exciting Firefox OS launch in India. Having one more strong partner as SPICE, we are confident that Firefox OS devices will realize a whole new category of smartphones with affordable price. Furthermore, we can ensure every user to enjoy the power of Web.”
With phones like these, Mozilla stands a chance to capture part of the market, but in the bit higher ends – it will have hard time competing with a number of low-cost Android phones.
For those uninitiated, Firefox OS is HTML5-based platform with Adaptive App Search or the Single Window Search, and comes pre-loaded with Facebook, Twitter and other popular apps. Users also benefit from the Firefox marketplace where they can find additional apps.
