Monkey: Journey to the West comes to the O2

Monkey: Journey to the West comes to the O2Talk about when a whole number of strange incidents come together…. I got a nice email from the folks at the O2 telling me that “Monkey: Journey to the West” is arriving there, and I can book tickets. Strange I thought, both the name and graphics seem familiar – reminding me immediately of the crazy 70’s TV series “Monkey Magic” – well turns out the stage adaptation that is “Monkey: Journey to the West”, is based on the same original text as “Monkey Magic” – written by a chap called Wu Cheng’en.

Anyhow, I digress. On checking out this event on the “The O2” website, and on Wikipedia, I find that Damon Albarn and Jamie Hewlett (of Gorillaz fame) have come up with the visuals and music – how odd methinks, they’ve just done something very similar for the BBC Olympics coverage – turns out their title sequence animations for the Beeb utilised the work they did for the stage show!

So there you have it, Mobile Operator to (part of) 90’s supergroup (Blur), to Cheesy 70’s TV series in only a couple of leaps! That was like Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon – sort of. A bit. 🙂
