It was back in May when we saw Alltel rolling out its City ID service. Now, the big dady of U.S. CDMA networks and a new owner of Alltel, Verizon Wireless, launched its own “enhanced mobile Caller ID application” which displays the city and state of incoming calls.
Developed by Cequint, City ID features information on more than 20,000 cities in North America, “providing enough detail to be useful identifying numbers calling from both across town and across the country.”
The bad news, though, is that the application only works with LG Voyager, the same device that can sing along Verizon’s Visual Voice Mail service. New Voyager buyers will get the app pre-installed along with 15-day trial, after which they’ll have to pour out $1.99 every month in order to keep using the service.
As for the existing Voyager users, they should (if they want City ID) visit any Verizon Wireless’ Store to receive the free software update.
