Gecko to bring AppStore kind of experience to Windows Mobile

Gecko is an interesting initiative designed to make life easier for the Windows Mobile users, by providing them with similar-to-the-AppStore experience for downloading and installing new applications. Apparently, the upcoming software (Gecko is still under development) is inspired by the Apple AppStore as well as Ubuntu Package Manager.

With Gecko installed on the device, discovering and installing new apps should be a snap, just like that’s already the case with the AppStore. No more dealing with various file type (exe, msi, and compressed files), but a single interface that should do the job, without you thinking what’s the procedure to install a certain app. All this is/should be possible over-the-air, without connecting a computer. Best of all, Gecko will (again like the AppStore) make sure you’re always running the latest versions of all the applications installed.

As for the developers, Gecko will offer several features to help them integrate Gecko functions in their apps. Software submission is easy and completely free, and all that’s required is to keep an application up to date.

One thing I don’t understand, however, is how will they monetize Gecko. Through ads, or are they waiting for some big company to acquire them? If I’m at Microsoft I would certainly find Gecko’s prospects interesting…

We’ll see where this goes. In the meantime, visit Gecko’s website for more information.
