LG edges into No. 3 spot among mobile phone manufacturers

The global mobile phone industry sees smaller manufacturers constantly jostling for the distinction of being the third-largest mobile phone manufacturer in the world. It’s something of a battle between industry heavy-weights.

The latest handset maker to earn that No. 3 badge is South Korea’s LG. Despite rocky economic conditions, LG managed to sell a solid 100 million mobile phones sold in 2008, edging past Motorola’s handset sales of 99.9 million units and Sony Ericsson’s 99.6 million units sold.

Granted, LG overtook the No. 3 manufacturer spot from Motorola by a mere 100,000 handsets, LG is looking to release a slew of new mobile phones in 2009 in a bid to cement their position as the No. 3 mobile phone manufacturer in the world.

Samsung still holds the runner-up spot with 200 million cellphones sold in 2008, coming in behind top-dog Nokia and their 470 million handsets sold.

Market leaders Nokia and Samsung are likely to hold onto their respective rankings in 2009, but we may see some more exciting jockeying from the likes of LG, Motorola, and Sony Ericsson.
