Could Vodafone and O2 share network-share across Europe?

telefonica-logoReuters is reporting today on what a Spanish Newspaper (called ‘Expansion’) has said regarding network sharing. If you recall, O2 and Vodafone are supposedly considering a network share in the UK, but, apparently this could (and I say could, not will) extend to a number of European countries in which both Operators are already giving service.

Interestingly, both networks have declined to make any comments about network sharing – which doesn’t mean anything of course, but that doesn’t stop the speculation. As I mentioned the other day, there are many potential benefits to be had from sharing equipment, sites, and connectivity, and there is a degree of sharing that occurs in the UK already between some of the other Operators.

If a deal were to extend to multiple European countries, it would be a huge logistical exercise initially, but of course savings would be multiplied in the long term, that’s for sure. What we really need here is some clarity (and hopefully some will come soon!) on what could be occurring in the short-to-medium term. I’ll be looking out for any hint of confirmation going forward and will be sure to report it when we know!
