Rogers: No SMS text message plan? No free incoming SMS for you!

These days, it’s night impossible to find a wireless subscriber without some sort of SMS text messaging bundle tacked onto their rate plan. But, for those of you Rogers subscribers that are still living in the “olden days,” (when voice calls were still novel) not having a text messaging plan is about to get more expensive. Word has it that Rogers is getting ready to announce a change to its SMS text messaging policy – come July 17th, customers without text messaging plans will be charged $0.15 for each and every incoming text message.

While US wireless customers are used to paying for incoming text messages, Canadian wireless users have traditionally enjoyed free incoming text messages. Rogers is apparently looking to encourage customers without text messaging plans to make the jump to an unlimited text messaging bundle. With the growing threat of SMS spam and social-networking services that announce updates via text messages, charges for incoming text messages can get expensive – more expensive than paying for the monthly text message bundle.

Fido customers won’t be affected by the SMS text message policy change, and Twitter via SMS services will still be free until the end of 2009. But, if Rogers does end up charging for incoming text messages, it could set a precedent in Canada that no one really wants.

Look for Rogers to announce their SMS text messaging pricing change in the next month or so.
