BlackBerry Storm 2 Gets a Look Under the Hood

Some brave soul has cracked the front off their BlackBerry Storm 2 and provided a look at the bare circuits beneath. The difference between the BlackBerry 9550 and the original Storm is immediately apparent – instead of the single button dab smack in the middle acting as a pivot point, all four corners are getting sensors. This is great news, since the old layout provided a very inconsistent experience when clicking along the edges, but more importantly, opens the door for multitouch capabilities, which could make for faster typing. Lately a lot of attention has been aimed at why the screen clicks when the device is on, but stays stiff when it’s off; it’s seeming likely that piezoelectronics are the technology behind it all. I’m curious to see what practical use the feature has in the long run… Localized resistance sounds cool, but we’ll have to see what developers and RIM do with the final product. I, for one, will welcome the new spongephone BlackBerry 9550 Storm when it comes out on Verizon this October.
