It seems India will yet again postpone its long-time awaited 3G license auction. The rumor is that the Law Ministry wants the terms of the license auction to be revised, and there’s also the concern that auctioning off radio spectrum before it has been vacated by the military could lead to legal challenges for compensation.
The final plan was to complete the 3G auction for two licenses by March and eventually raise around $7.6 billion until the fiscal year ends on March 31st. Additionally, spectrum for the third license is expected to be available by September, while the fourth license may not be available until 2013.
Two of the state-owned telecoms operators, BSNL and MTNL, already operate 3G networks and they will likely be laughing their way to the bank with the uptake of data services.
