Nokia Siemens Networks is predicting that by 2015, only 5 years from now, mobile data usage will hit 23 exabytes (24,696,061,952 gigabytes) per year. That’s a 10,000% increase from today.
Whether or not that number is even remotely accurate is irrelevant, we all know data usage is skyrocketing and doubling every few months. Nokia Siemens Networks is in the business of selling network equipment so they’ll throw you a big number so you buy a large amount of their stuff. The message they’re trying to put out in their press release is that you can’t just throw additional capacity at this problem. You have to do more.
What exactly that “more” is … I’m still trying to figure out. Any network engineers know?
