Philips’ GoGear Connect PMP packs Android 2.1

Look out Archos because Philips just introduced the GoGear Connect and this VoIP-enabled personal media player is rocking Android 2.1 OS.

Philips has been a bit slow with the official specs, but the device is expected to have Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS, a touchscreen with haptic feedback, a microSD slot, DIVX/XVID support, a trackball for additional navigation and internal storage that starts at 8 GB and goes up to 64 GB. VoIP calling will be possible with an attached microphone, and there’s no word yet on pricing or availability but report indicate it could hit by early summer.

As mentioned before, it will run Android 2.1 but Philips is crafting their own media-centric user interface on top. I’m not terribly familiar with Philips’ software chops, but we all know Android needs help with its media player. The video below shows off some of the new UI elements, and I’m hoping this gigantic version is just a prototype to show off the interface.
