Motorola Droid receiving Android 2.1 today!

What has probably seemed like an eternity for some Motorola Droid users, your wait is finally coming to an end, starting today. Verizon is said to be rolling out the Android 2.1 update to about 10,000 people today, and have it completely rolled out by Thursday.

The update was originally supposed to begin its roll-out about two weeks ago, but was delayed for whatever reason. It looks like Verizon will be rolling out the update to about 1,000 users soon today, and then gradually push it the another 9,000 by the end of the night. Engadget had gotten hold of an email that claims the roll out will begin today. It’s about time, Verizon!

While you could wait until the update hits your handset, there may also be another way of updating your Droid. As with the Nexus One, there was a way to manually install the update that enabled multi-touch across the board, and it will probably be the case with the Droid as well. What we don’t know is what the update actually contains. Whether if it is the full update that the Nexus One has, or if it has gotten some holes punched into it, leaving some features out.  Only time can tell what this new update will bring the users, hopefully it hasn’t sacrificed too many, if any features that you’d find on the Nexus One.

For those who have possibly already received the update? How are you liking the updated gallery, live wallpapers, and the voice-to-text option found throughout almost every text entry field?  If you have a Nexus One as well, can you notice any differences between the updates? We’ll be sure to keep you guys updated at the OTA roll-out continues, as well as providing how to manually update your Droid when the option becomes available. For now, sit back, relax, and hopefully you’ll be one of the lucky 10,000 people receiving the update today!

[UPDATE: Follow this link to manually install your Droid to Android 2.1 right now!]
