The weekend offered some slight glimpses of the next iPhone but there wasn’t any definitive proof. Well friends, it looks like the real deal is out in the wild and the Gizmodo’s breakdown indicates that is could be a radical departure from previous versions.
If this is the next iPhone, it’s going to look a lot different than previous Apple handsets. According to Giz, “The back is entirely flat, made of either glass (more likely) or ceramic or shiny plastic in order for the cell signal to poke through. Tapping on the back makes a more hollow and higher pitched sound compared to tapping on the glass on the front/screen, but that could just be the orientation of components inside making for a different sound.”
There’s also a front-facing camera, which all but confirms what we’ve been hearing about the next iPhone having video calling capabilities. There’s also a different display that appears to be smaller but it will have a better resolution. No word on the exact pixel display, but it’s safe to assume 960 X 640 in order to be backwards compatible with previous apps.
Like the iPad, the next iPhone will use micro-SIM, so you won’t be able to pop in your old SIM card. The handset is three grams heavier, the power, mute and volume buttons (volume is now two separate buttons) are all metallic, and there’s an aluminum border around the outside. The battery is also reportedly 16% bigger, which is always welcome news.
We’re a bit conflicted about the look of the new iPhone: while the bigger battery and better screen are much appreciated, without having it in hand, it is too difficult to tell how good it will feel in everyday usage. As for the software, there isn’t much on that front because Giz said the device has been deactivated remotely and it can’t be rebooted through iTunes. As we all know, the next iPhone will rock the 4.0 operating system, which includes multitasking, a social gaming network and other goodies.
