The first augmented reality flashmob organized for Layar users in Amsterdam, Netherlands

I’ve no idea how we missed reporting on the first Layar-powered augmented reality flashmob in the world. It happened at the Dam Square in Amsterdam on April 24th.

Sander Veenhof is the creator behind this amazing idea and to turn it into (augmented) reality, he has teamed up with TAB Worldmedia, one of the leading creative media companies that specializes in Layar concepts.

The result was impressive. An average Joe hasn’t noticed the difference, but folks with iPhones and Android-powered devices with Layar app installed had a completely different image of the square. Just imagine Superman, zombies, gladiator and many other characters around you and you’ll get the picture. Instead of live street artists (human statues), there were virtual statues all around you, some of them even moving. It was incredible, or at least I imagine so. And there are quite a few images uploaded on MobyPicture to prove the claim.

If this doesn’t compel you to install Layar, nothing will. 😉
