Scalado AB, a leading developer of digital imaging software, today announced that Scalado is providing Scalado CAPS as an extended imaging solution in Symbian smartphones with camera. CAPS enables highly efficient capture, editing, browsing, and manipulation of high-resolution megapixel images efficiently on any mobile camera-phone, thus giving Symbian smartphones with cameras the speed, performance and functionality that end-users would expect from a high-end, megapixel camera.

As part of the collaboration, Symbian will develop and add an extended C++ API on top of Scalado CAPS in order for the Symbian OS licensees to easily add their own camera, album and photo editing-applications. CAPS will be available in the Software Development Kit (SDK) for testing purposes and can be licensed directly from Scalado for its use in products.

Future users of Symbian smartphones will benefit from the unique features of the Scalado CAPS imaging SDK including feature modules such as SpeedView for instant image viewing, and AutoRama for automatic panorama function. All CAPS applications will enable faster and more efficient use of the device’s camera function, which in turn should help increase MMS traffic for operators.

Scalado CAPS images are decoded and encoded using Scalado’s patented Image management technology RAJPEG. RAJPEG reduces the amount of RAM memory required by a factor of 25x while still processing full resolution mega pixel images, and increases performance for image manipulation by a factor of up to 10x.

The new high level API will allow Symbian developers to easily design imaging applications without worrying about image processing, processing power, memory, image filters or poor user experience, which are all taken care of and built into Scalado CAPS.

Scalado CAPS will be distributed with Symbian OS from early 2007. The end-user benefits of the solution will be demonstrated on the Scalado and Symbian stand at The Symbian Smartphone show in Hall N4 at Stand 50.
