Intel preps a chip for iPhone rivals

Intel InsideIt makes perfect sense that Intel is trying to boost its handset processor market share. Lately, Intel’s CEO Paul Otellini said to CNNMoney that his company is readying a low-power chip designed for smart portable devices that will compete with Apple’s iPhone.

As we all know, iPhone generate a ton of buzz even before its announcement. After it has been officially presented at the Macworld, the number one question for handset makers’ CEOs was – “How you’re going to compete with an iPhone?” And, not surprisingly, Intel sees this as a great opportunity.

Nevertheless, other processor manufacturers are also working on similar chips. TI is using every possible event to promote its OMAPs, which are already used in the high-end Nokia smartphones. Marvell and Samsung, potential processor suppliers for iPhone, are also preparing their chips. Plus, there’s AMD…

All in all, the mobile processor market is getting more competitive than ever. The bottom line is that at the end consumers will have more powerful, yet not-that-expensive devices. Gimmie, gimmie… 🙂
