Irish start-up Cubic Telecom has launched what it claims to be the first “truly global” mobile phone at TechCrunch 40 trade show in San Francisco. The new phone relies on GSM radio paired with the MAXroam SIM card, the “world’s first universal SIM card,” which offers favorable country-to-country phone rates anywhere in the world. The phone also offers full PBX functionality, allowing users to create up to 50 permanent local phone numbers for themselves. In addition, there the WiFi support on-board, meaning that users will be able to benefit from the low VoIP prices when they’re in a hotspot or talk for free with other Cubic Mobile users.

Starting from October 1st, Cubic’s handset will be sold in two flavors: basic phone priced at 99.95 and a Windows Mobile smartphone for 159.95. People who don’t want to change their handsets can buy the MAXroam SIM card separately for use in any unlocked GSM phone for 29.99. Sounds interesting, especially for our readers in the States who use the CDMA network and are in need of a GSM phone when travelling.
