NASA plans to bring mobile phones to the Moon

Phone on the moon

You’ve probably already heard about NASA plans to build a Moon base at the south pole of the lunar satellite in 2020. They’ll also need to provide astronauts with some communications equipment to allow them to communicate between themselves, as well as to keep in touch with NASA’s HQ and their loved ones on Earth. In order to do so, NASA scientists are working alongside its UK colleagues from British National Space Center to erect a satellite phone service for the Moon. The two agencies plan to launch the Moonlite mission in 2012 as a prototype system for the actual service that will be in place for the astronauts. NASA expects that astronauts will get full four-bar service on the lunar service.

Now I wonder will they want to get the prize from YouNeverCall. $10,000 sounds like a change for NASA’s budgets, but that’s still money in the bank…
