Gameloft announces mobile games for touchscreen handsets

With touchscreen enabled handsets getting all the attention these days, it doesn’t surprises that a major mobile game studio like Gameloft announced that it will launch a series of games especially designed to take advantage of a touch based input.

Block Breaker

We don’t know now the exact list of games the company will release in the coming months, but we are certain they have the required expertise. As a matter of fact, aside from developing games for touch-enabled Nintendo DS, they have more than 15 “touchscreen mobile titles” in catalogue — including Block Breaker Deluxe, Brain Challenge, Bubble Bash, Platinum Solitaire, Chessmaster, Miami Nights: Single in the City, Paris Hilton’s Diamond Quest, Sexy Poker Manga, Catchphrase, Deal or No Deal, Shrek the Third, Real Football: Manager Edition, and CSI Miami. These games were mostly developed using Java, though some were made as native apps for Windows Mobile platform.

So what’s next? Well, I guess Gameloft is eagerly eyeing the release of iPhone SDK and first Android-based devices, when we’ll see them flushing the public (and media) with press releases.

Commenting on the touchscreen-based mobile gaming, Gameloft’s President and CEO Michel Guillemot said, “This is a new step in terms of development, one that leads us to rethink how we approach our game controls so that players can interact directly with the screen and get a greater gaming experience. Touch screen games are perfect examples of how modern technology can advance the gaming industry.”
