HTC Thunderbolt and EVO 4G Gingerbread update on their way soon

Surprise, surprise, the HTC Thunderbolt and EVO 4G will be receiving the Android 2.3 Gingerbread update sometime soon, according to a representative familiar with the matter. We know that HTC has a relatively good track record with updating its handsets, and that trend doesn’t seem to be slowing down anytime soon.

Aiming for an early summer release, the Thunderbolt’s Gingerbread update will likely get the most attention, as it’s the latest and greatest handset available. Hopefully we’ll find some battery life optimizations within said update when it releases, as well. Verizon is currently shipping the smartphone with Android 2.2 Froyo.

Unfortunately, Android updates are scattered around, and can take a long time, which spurs some users to take things into their own hands. Luckily, Android is the best OS to tinker with.

Almost a year old now, the EVO 4G is still considered to be one of the best Android smartphones available today, and we would expect quite a bit of backlash if the handset didn’t receive at least one more update in its life time. Although, we’re already looking forward t the next handset in the EVO line.

If everything goes as planned, both the Thunderbolt and the EVO should receive the Android 2.3(2.3.3) update before the end of June. At that point, we’ll be seeing more handsets ship with Gingerbread, and it’s possible that we’ll see Android Ice Cream announced at Google I/O.

Either way, we’ve had out fill of Froyo, bring on the Gingerbread!
