ZTE wants to become one of top 5 Android smartphone makers this year

ZTE has ambitious plans, to say the least. After reporting their mobile phone sales increased 51%, the Chinese company said it aims to emerge as one of the top 5 Android smartphone makers by the end of this year. At the same time, tablets are also of concern for ZTE with the goal to hit the top 3 spot in the same period.

In total, they target to ship 12 million “smart terminals” in 2011, and although they haven’t defined the term, it’s safe to bet it includes both smartphones and tablets.

We’re not sure what to make of it. When it comes to the Western hemisphere, ZTE has a long way to go to approach the top dogs in the Android world, namely HTC, Samsung, Motorola, Sony Ericsson and LG. However, they could find a sweet spot in the ever-growing markets of China and India and reach their targets that way. Then, and once they figure out how to make really cool devices, exporting them to the west shouldn’t be that hard… or so we think.

Meanwhile, other Chinese company, Huawei, also has several Android products and we’re sure more are coming…
