HTC Touch HD bringing WVGA to the HTC Touch lineup

HTC Touch HD with WVGA displayWhat’s this? Another HTC Touch handset to complement the already impressive HTC Touch Diamond and HTC Touch Pro offerings? Damn skippy it is!

The latest HTC Touch handset to rear its pretty little head is the HTC Touch HD that you see pictured here. Notice that incredibly crisp, bright, and big display? Yup, that’s a little slice of WVGA heaven right there, folks!

The HTC Touch Diamond and HTC Touch Pro hit the scene with a straight-up legit VGA display in tow and wow’ed the world. Now, HTC is set to take us on another high-resolution ride with the HTC Touch HD’s WVGA display.

Here’s what we know about the HTC Touch HD. The all-touchscreen handset comes in at a svelte, iPhone-fighting thickness of just 12mm – overall dimensions are 115mm x 62.8mm x 12mm. A Qualcomm 7201A processor clocked at 528Mhz will work with a massive 512MB’s of ROM and 256MB’s of RAM to power the Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional operating system. The quad-band (850/900/1800/1900Mhz) GSM HTC Touch HD will be fully 3G HTC Touch HD with WVGA displaycompatible in the US – which means the HTC Touch HD will be rocking HSPA support for US frequencies. And, with integrated GPS, WiFi, 5 megapixel camera, microSD card slot, and 1350mAh battery, we can say quite confidently that the HTC Touch HD is going to be one badass touchscreen handset.

The best part – the HTC Touch HD will feature a huge WVGA touchscreen display with a full 480×800 resolution! If you thought the gloriously high-resolution display on the HTC Touch Diamond and HTC Touch Pro were nice, wait until you the HTC Touch HD launches with a widescreen VGA display. The smartphone market should be scared, or at least scrambling to compete with this WVGA monster.

Unfortunately, the larger display size squeezes out the touch-sensitive navigation controls that we had the pleasure of using on the HTC Touch Diamond and HTC Touch Pro. The HTC Touch HD will include a built-in stylus to navigate HTC Touch HD with WVGA displaythose small, tricky Windows Mobile 6.1 menus, but with the HTC TouchFLO 3D UI you probably won’t have to rely on the stylus too much.

We can live without the navigation/directional controls, especially if it means we’ll be putting eyes on that WVGA display. Truth be told, we’d probably sacrifice kidney to have a chance to own a high-end HTC Touch handset with a WVGA touchscreen.

HTC is usually good about announcing its handsets well ahead of the actual product launch, but we haven’t heard anything from HTC about this particular beauty. Even more confusing is the rumor that HTC is planning to drop the HTC Touch HD on the world this Fall – in time to push the HTC Touch HD into consumer hands for the holiday shopping season. That means we’ll likely be seeing the HTC Touch HD going from straight rumor to actual product launch within a matter of months – an unprecedented move from HTC.

Bring on the WVGA, HTC! We can’t wait to put hands (even if we have to sacrifice a finger or two) on the HTC Touch HD.

Check out the size chart to see how the HTC Touch HD measures up against the other big-hitting touchscreens on market.
