Orange goes in to Kenya

Orange has announced that it will soon become the commercial brand for Telkom Kenya, following France Telecom’s acquisition of 51% of its capital in December 07. This means that Telkom Kenya will become the first integrated (fixed, mobile, internet) operator in the country.

We’ve often heard stories about how genuinely useful Mobile devices are in countries where perhaps the fixed-line infrastructure isn’t so great – but of course now there is a new dimension whereby Mobile Broadband is a very real proposition – powered by those ubiquitous dongle thingies!

Apparently the Internet and Mobile offerings will be in Nairobi and Mombassa first, then across the whole of the country over the course of the year – the plan being for Orange to lead in all the areas it is playing, with broadband internet being the speahead of that plan.

In parallel, a Foundation will be established to develop corporate philanthropy actions in the country, as has been the Orange Foundation policy for the last 20 years in countries where the Group operates.
