Dell Might Be Getting Into Smartphone Game

Dell working with Quanta to develop a Windows Mobile 6.0 smartphoneDigiTimes is reporting that, according to “industry sources,” Dell is working with Quanta Computer to develop a new smartphone. The collaborative project, codenamed “Fly,” is purportedly using the Windows Mobile 6.0 Professional operating system – so we know that the smartphone will be a touchscreen PDA – with HSDPA. A qwerty keyboard is likely for the device, although detailed specs have yet to be confirmed. In an ODM market where HTC is king, Dell decided to go with Quanta – which provides handsets for Hewlett Packard and O2 – because they don’t market their products under their own brand.

This news comes hot on the heels of Dell’s decision to quietly nix the Axim line of PDA’s. It just makes more sense for Dell to push smartphones versus stand-alone PDA’s – what with the PDA going the way of the VHS (yes, VHS is dead, people). And if the rumored specs pan out, we could have another strong competitor in an already crowded smartphone-market.
